CO₂ Separation and Purification

SWCHEM’s PSA / VPSA CO₂ separation and purification technology separates and purifies CO₂ from CO₂-containing gas streams by using the different adsorption capacities of adsorbents for various gas components under different pressure conditions.

Under pressure, CO₂ is selectively adsorbed by the adsorbent. When the pressure is reduced or vacuum desorption is applied, CO₂ is desorbed and recovered as concentrated product gas.

This process is suitable for CO₂ recovery, purification and upgrading from a wide range of industrial gas sources.

Process principle

The CO₂ separation and purification process is based on selective adsorption and pressure or vacuum swing regeneration.

At the adsorption step, CO₂ in the feed gas is selectively adsorbed by the adsorbent, while weakly adsorbed components pass through the adsorber and leave the system as off-gas.

During regeneration, the adsorber is depressurized or regenerated under vacuum, allowing the adsorbed CO₂ to be released. After further purification, part of the concentrated CO₂ may be recycled to the PSA system, while the remaining CO₂ product can be compressed and filled into cylinders or sent to downstream users.

Through continuous cyclic operation of multiple adsorbers, the system achieves stable CO₂ separation, recovery and purification.

Feed gas

Applicable feed gases include:

  • Fermentation gas, shift gas and regeneration gas from decarbonization units
  • Coal mine gas
  • Other CO₂-containing gas mixtures

Control Mode and Features

Control Mode

PSA units are controlled by dedicated controllers and instruments. Depending on the PSA unit capacity, automation level and customer control requirements, a DCS control system consistent with the customer’s main plant may be used, or a standalone PLC control system may be selected.

Control Features

In addition to conventional PSA sequence control, loop control and other control functions, SWCHEM also provides specialized control strategies for fully automatic load adjustment, fault diagnosis and fault isolation.

The system can support adaptive optimization, self-diagnosis and fault isolation, improving operational flexibility and helping ensure long-term, stable and safe operation of the unit.
